THEME
Essex Lost will deal heavily and primarily with the themes of balance, both political and personal, and of decisions and consequences.
Balance is paramount to the life of a Changeling. Only by walking the very careful line between the sanity of mortal life and the madness of the Fae can the frail balance of a Changelings soul be maintained. Only by monitoring the duality of their lives can the Lost hope to keep their sanity, Clarity and sense of self. And that’s without even starting upon the dangerous and careful political lives that Changelings of the freehold are forced to live. Balance is what it’s all about.
Decision and consequence is also a theme at the heart of Lost. The Wyrd, the magic of Faerie, as I see it, represents the connection between all things; the ties of Time and Fate that link people, places and things together into the overall story. The power that the Lost draw upon is the raw power of stories themselves. The consequences of making the wrong decision at the wrong time can have far reaching effects on any story.
MOOD
The intricacies and movements of the Changeling’s Courts are fickle and wild: the excitement and celebration of one day degenerating into the madness and horror of the next. I guess the mood of Lost is variable, changing and uncontrollable. The mood of flux is inescapable. As the days pass, so do the seasons. And with the seasons, power passes between courts and, again, the mood of the game is always liable to change.
One mood that can’t be ignored throughout the Lost venue is that of fearful fascination. Following their escape from the abuse of their Fae Keepers, any Changeling would be idiotic not to experience some fear. The certainty that the bogeyman under the bed could actually be there however gives the Lost some kind of control over their fears. And, indeed, it is due to the exposure they have had to the Others that can fill a Changeling life with hope. It’s important to remember the beauty and wonder that fills the world of the escapees. Whilst it is possible to immerse oneself back into the world of the mortals, most Changelings find themselves drawn back to the Freehold and the sinister beauty that fills the lives of those that dwell there. Is the excitement of the Changeling lifestyle worth the risks and dangers associated with it?
SETTING
Essex is an old, in fact, an ancient place heaped with strange tales and histories. Stories are told of all manner of oddness that might be attributed to the Fae and their capricious ways. Throughout all this time however, the Lost: their Courts, their meetings, their associates, friends and enemies, they have remained well hidden. The Changelings of Essex have always been here. In fact the many tales of Essex’s ‘secret tunnels’ might well be a reference to the trods that erupt from the Hedge into the county.
The authority of the seasonal courts is felt throughout a great deal of Essex, with the power passing between rulers of each Court as the seasons run. Although each Court has it’s own territories laid out and declared, for as long as any member of the Freehold can remember, gatherings have taken place, hosted by the currently empowered Court, welcoming all of the local Lost to their events.
It is at these events that the wheeling and dealing of the Changelings takes place; the high politics and the courtly gossip, the intrigue and the backstabbing, where pledges and deals are made and broken between the courts and their courtiers. Under the watchful eyes of the hosting Season Kings and Queens, Changeling live continues as it ever has – with all the excitement and adventure that this entails.
